Diego Bolívar is a Colombian multidisciplinary artist based in Chicago. His work moves between cinema, painting and writing, exploring identity, time and the human experience through poetic and experimental forms.
As a filmmaker, my work moves between fiction, documentary and experimental cinema. I am interested in intimate stories that reveal larger social and existential questions, often incorporating elements of absurdity, memory and fragmented identity.
I have directed and developed short films and independent projects that have been presented at various festivals. My documentary work has been recognized with Emmy Awards, including Rostros, produced for Univision Chicago. I have also worked as a videographer and editor for organizations such as Univision Chicago, NBC Telemundo, Chicago Tribune and Disney Channel.
Currently, I am developing new short films and my first feature-length project, continuing my exploration of cinematic language as a space for reflection, tension and emotional truth.
.
My painting practice centers on the human figure, approached through a dialogue between abstraction and figuration. The body becomes a fragmented and mutable space where themes such as identity, trauma, transformation and inner conflict emerge.
Through distortion, color and gesture, my work questions traditional representations of the body and challenges fixed notions of the self. I am interested in the body as a site of tension between the internal and the external, the personal and the collective.
I have exhibited my work in cities such as Buenos Aires and Chicago, and I continue to develop new bodies of work that expand this visual investigation.
As a writer, I work across fiction, scripts and experimental texts. My writing often explores solitude, displacement, memory and time, with a strong interest in existential and absurd narratives.
I develop stories and screenplays that exist in dialogue with my film and visual work, allowing characters, themes and ideas to move between mediums. Writing is a foundational part of my creative process, where many of my cinematic and visual projects first take shape.
I am currently working on short stories, screenplays and long-form projects that continue to expand my narrative universe.
